The concept of active learning has grown to encompass a huge variety of instructional techniques, usually referring to some combination of increased physical activity or interaction, deeper processing, elaboration or explanation of material, planning of learning activities, question asking, metacognitive monitoring, and social collaboration. As a result of this diversity, it is difficult to identify the causal factors that lead to performance differences under active learning or to predict whether such effects will generalize to other kinds of activities or materials. some advantages of this method are reported as :

1-Promotes better retention of learning

2-Deepens understanding and enhances students' ability to transfer knowledge to "real-life" situtations

3- Engages the student more, and is thus usually more enjoyable

4- May address a greater variety of learning styles

But it has been  said by some teachers that this method has some disadvantages too such as: 1-Often require more time for the instructor to prepare well

2-Less efficient than didactic learning for presenting foundational knowledge

3-May be frustrating for students who are not prepared to participate.

Active learning refers to techniques where students do more than simply listen to a lecture. Students are DOING something including discovering, processing, and applying information.

Active learning "derives from two basic assumptions:

(1) that learning is by nature an active endeavor and

 (2) that different people learn in different ways" (Meyers and Jones, 1993) 

One of the more understandable definitions of active learning is Donald R. Paulson and Jennifer L. Faust:  "Active Learning" is, in short, anything that students do in a classroom other than merely passively listening to an instructor's lecture. This includes everything from listening practices which help the students to absorb what they hear, to short writing exercises in which students react to lecture material, to complex group exercises in which students apply course material to "real life" situations and/or to new problems” (Active Learning for The College Classroom )

As I see it, active learning is a form of learning in which students have to understand, reinvent and reconstruct everything they learn, not to passively receive or memorize information coming from outside, namely from their teachers. Active learning is consistent with the active methods in the pedagogical domain. In the active methods, teachers are more mentors and organizers of leaning experiences and situations than simple trasmitters of ready made and established truths, or truths uncritically  imposed on the student.  In contradistinction, the conservative and traditional methods are oriented, say, to indoctrination, memorizing and rote learning, Needless to say, the traditional and conservative methods are to conformist students such as the acive methods are to innovators and creators. Also, and as you say, when active learning is the case, learns wish usually understand the overall meaning of the subject at hand and tend to go beyond the idea of knowledge and learning as a simple or isolated compilation of pieces of information. Active learning is the type of learning that lies at the heart of J. Piaget's and L, Vygotsky's  approaches to development and education.

Well , for me learning for teaching and learning further is "active learning" ...

So should it be for students , it is a process that keeps inquisitiveness alive ...

The more it is, the easier is learning /updation process...

Students should be involved in the training process!

I agree with Dr Aamal

Nowadays, more and more adults are involved in a continues life long learning of various subject matters for professional or personal interest reasons. They want every intermediate learning part to be pre-sold, pre-reviewed, and alike in order to understand the importance of that piece to their practical interests.

Yet, they want to learn it in an active manner giving a good hold on its practical usage and clear connections to the other pieces being learned.   

The moral support given by the teacher, the academic community and stakeholders will give an impact in the active and successful participation of the student as a globally competitive citizen in a just and humane society. Thus, be able to achieve the triangulation of instruction, research, and community outreach.

   Passive learning is a spoon feeding learning  and is used in primary and secondary schools, while active learning is based on stimulation the students to think and discover things which are related to her/his syllabus and should be used in college students . So in active learning the students need to read and understand the considerable references to cover their syllabus well.

I did say "active " learning is progressive ... No more monopoly over understanding . It is for all and a reason for growth ...

although , it is out my field but I think its a nice project.

Learning by experience and questioning our mental models on a continuous basis is active learning.
