What's the difference in calculating the enthalpy of formation and enthalpy of mixing of Fe-Cr-Ni alloy? (Assume the wt% is 27%, 50% and 23% respectively). Thanks!
Enthalpy of mixing is mainly used to describe thermodynamic properties of solution. Enthalpy of formation is often used for some intermetallic compounds.
I agree with the answer of Dr Quifeng Shu. That depends on the formation of an intermetallic compound. Normally the value of the enthalpy of formation is considerably higher that that for the simple mixing process, because interactions similar to chemical bonds are involved.
