Plant genetic is the study of the heredity and variations in plants. In other words, the study of how genes are transmited to the offspring and how the relationship stablished amongst them generate the variations in a close relationship with the environment.

While plant genetic is a discipline by itself, plant breeding needs the use of several disciplines as genetic, botanic, physiology, biochemic, amongnst other.
Plant breeding deals with changes and improvement of heredity of plants which are better than the existing ones. Plant genetics deals with the heredity and variations that occur in plants. Heredity is the transfer of genes from one generation to the next. However, it is pertinent to record that “Plant breeding” was there even when the term of “Genetics” was not coined.
No doubt, one need the knowledge of Plant Genetics for Plant Breeding, but plant breeding was there even before the term of genetics was coined. According to literature, Thomas Fairchild (1717) developed first Inter specific hybrid. Yes, now a days the knowledge of genetics playing a very important role both in conventional and non-conventional plant breeding.
If selection is accepted as the most universal plant improvement (generically named plant breeding) method, then plant breeding was practiced, as early as thousands years before, by Mayans which probably selected maize from interespecific teosinte's hybrids. However, the current plant breeding imply the systematization of methods using statistical designs that allow to extract those valuable phenotypes, supported by the use of other tools as molecular markers.
