I need your kind help in selecting an appropriate index of competition. I made an analysis of the efficacy of polycrop farming compared to monocultures of 7 crop species. To measure the interaction effect between neighbouring plants in each plot, I used a Relative Index of Interaction (RII), following Armas et al. (2004), to estimate the extent of competition between neighbouring plants, to explain that in a random planting design, competition between crop species is reduced and facilitative effect prevails, resulting in a higher overall yield, as measured by Land Equivalent Ratio (LER).

RII = (Yi-SC + Yi-MC)/ (Yi-SC − Yi-MC)There are quite a few indices to measure interactions, but most of them are in some way a function of LER.  I had an idea that RRI is not a function of LER, but a reviewer points out that it is.  LER is the [Sum total of (YiMC / YiSC)], where YiMC is the per-plant yield (in kg) of the ith crop in the multiple cropping (MC) system, and YiSC is the yield of the same crop in monoculture or sole crop (SC) plots.

The original paper on RII is by Armas et al. (2004).  Besides RII, other indices are 'associate effect' of McGilchrist (1965) and 'relative severity of competition' (Snaydon 1991), which are obvious derivatives of LER.   Other frequently indices include relative competition index RCI = (Yi-SC − Yi-MC)/ Yi-SC

and

log Response Ratio: ln RR = ln(Yi-MC/Yi-SC) = ln(1 − RCI)

All these indices are summarized and reviewed in brief in Weigelt and Joliffe (2003).

Armas et al. (2004) and a few others indicated some problems with RCI and LnRR, and recommended RII. However, a reviewer of my paper showed that RII is a function of LER: RII = (Yi-SC + Yi-MC)/ (Yi-SC − Yi-MC)   ...   (1)      = (1 − pLERi)/ (1 + pLERi)       ... (2)

Therefore, it would be spurious to use it when LER has already employed.

Can you please suggest any other index that can be calculated from yield data (1) from crop mixture and (2) from sole crop systems of the component species? This index must be independent of LER.
