Addition: if you do not dislike programming language, using Matlab is always a very good option for programming and analyzing your experiments. Brain Vision Analyzer uses GUI, so you can just click buttons.

I would advise to go to the nearest hospital and look which local EEG-system provider they have. There are numerous maufacturers in the world ! Even education-oriented low-cost systems. If you go for ''your own'' software: try Fieldtrip software.

There are many different options for hardware and software.

I think as a first step towards the hardware you need to decide on the resolution i.e. how many electrodes do you need for your experiment.

We used a 128 electrode system since I was aiming for better spatial filtering and accuracy. I used the EGI system with geodescic sensor net. We used E-prime software to mark the timeline cues on the EEG data. Data recording was handled by an Apple G4 computer.

You may also need a comfortable chair, a quiet room and screening from interference is a bonus.

You can also find systems using the open EEG technology as well as devices based on the 10-20 electrode placement system.

I can tell you about my experience at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan (Italy). We mainly use two systems to collect EEG: Micromed (for clinical recordings) and BrainProducts (for research purposes).

Our Micromed system setup for long term monitoring of epiiepsy is organized as follows:

- a 32 channels recording unit (usually 24 EEG + 8 polygraphic channels)

- two videocameras synchronized with EEG recording

- one holter unit for 24hour-EEG

The software provided by Micromed offers the most common tools for EEG analysis in time and frequency domain. Additional plug-ins can be requested specifically for seizure analysis. Moreover, data can be exported for further analysis with external software (i.e EEGLAB).

Our BrainProducts setup consists of:

- a BrainAmp MR Plus unit (32 channel EEG amplifier)

- a BrainAmp ExG unit (16 channel bipolar amplifier)

- a PC running Presentation for visual and acoustic stimulation

The software BrainVision Analyzer2 is extremely powerful and, mostly, allows every kind of analysis, it can be linked to EEGLAB for extra self-made processing.

We are using the Neurofax 3200 by Nihon Kohden, yes..using the mostly used cap based on 10-20 system. Software is included in the system, but we can save the data in ASCII and process using matlab.

Make sure the setup of the experiment in consistent especially when taking the data at different times, i.e. room condition, stimulation used, length of data recorded, and many more. However, it also depends on the purpose of your study.

There isn't much I can add on the hardware side, given that I think it has been covered brilliantly (we use an ANT ASA-LAB-136 system and a Waveguard 128 cap). However, a brief word of caution for your analysis set up. Depending on your recording set up you will be given slightly different data formats on the output. For example, ANT products often split the data into continuous data files and trigger files, wereas some systems will combine the two. If you decide to use something like brainvision analyser then this probably won't be a problem as the software is very intuitive and highly user friendly (highly recommended if you have the budget for it). However, if you are intending to use a Matlab based approach then there can be problems depending on what plugins you are using. Most of the time it isn't very problematic, however, I had huge difficulties using Fieldtrip for eeg analysis (brilliant set of functions but not the easiest thing to learn how to use). This was mostly down to the file types that our system outputs (.cnt and .trg separately, FT does not support loading these without first using eeglab to create a .set file). In sum, you can get around most of these issues by persisting, but just somethings to bear in mind. Good luck !

I guess it depends what type of work he wants to do. High frequency oscillations require a high sampling rate. If his samples will come from different brands (Grass, XLTEK) then may need to use a universal reading tool like Persyst

There are several companies that enable you to have multiple electrode recordings. Examples include ANT and Gtec. Companies that provide the amplifiers also have their own software which you need to purchase separately.

Sorry to ask so bluntly: Why does he need "his own signals"? Just to do signal processing? A proper recording system like the gtec or any other costs thousands of € PLUS you nee the experience to be confident with the data AND the right patients... all in all a binding of ressources, which I am questioning in your case. Wouldn't it be much cheaper to buy the licence to get access to the existing data sets like "EPILEPSIA" or even participate in the "iEEG.org" initiative for a signal processor?

Getting your own EEG data is not just an "out of the box" endeavor....

Hello Abhishek - it is really important to know what is the research question - anyone can record high fidelity EEG with Neuroscan or Grass amplifiers. The data needs to be stored on a database. It is important also to record other variables with appropriate data governance eg patient demographics, treatment and timing, scan results if available, video if available etc. etc. Then analysis - we have built our own software suites - see my publication list for details, but you can also utilise EEGlab / MATLAB. Hope this helps.

I use grass P511amplifiers in conjunction with kiethly A to D boards boards and Neuroscan software. This is about the best system available out there for recording EEGs and ERPs. However the latest version of Neuroscan software, which is far superior to the version I'm using only works with Neuroscan Synamps. The system is prohibitively expensive and simpler versions such as Matlab are cheaper but require a lot more programming expertise up front. Hope this helps.

If you wish to capture epileptic events, it is probably wise to use ambulatory equipment such as from Compumedics.

The 'best' setup will depend on what you will do with the data after is collected or will question you are trying to answer. Will you do Research or Clinical work? For Clinical work I would recommend Natus products which come with Persyst software for online or offline analysis and good seizure/spike detectors (http://www.natus.com/index.cfm?page=products_neurology&crid=146). For research purposes then I would use BrainVision (http://www.brainproducts.com/products_by_apps.php) or Biosemi (http://www.biosemi.com/products.htm), because they will give you more freedom to manipulate your data offline with other softwares - Matlab toolbox, EEGlab and so on. But it is also a matter of budget, how much money can you spend?

Although this is a research forum, I would suggest looking at a commercial product that I just learned about called Emotiv. Their website is in the link below. I went to a presentation on this product and it seems to satisfy your requirements, although not being a clinical device. It costs a few hundred dollars, I believe, so should be affordable in the context of a university research programme.
