I am trying to prepare catalyst. Is their any adverse effect if activated carbon soaked in 1 N nitric acid for 3 days is used as support in catalyst preparation?
Carbon nanotubes are typically activated by boiling in concentrated nitric acid. In this process carbon is oxidized resulting in the formation of carboxylic acid, phenolic and other oxygen containing groups on the carbon surface (in addition to CO and CO2 which of course results in a loss of the carbon weight).
Activated carbon has been pre-oxidised; treatment in nitric acid for 3 days will result in further oxidation. The interesting question for you is to determine whether the proportion of the surface oxygen groups will change when soaking in nitric acid.
