The oven temperature for drying rice plant samples for determination of moisture content is recommended by IRRI at 80 0C for 12 to 72 hours till a constant mass.
The drying period (12 to 72 hours) depends on type of samples (relatively dry to too wet sample etc). The constant mass refers to the change in mass recorded over a four-hour period, which should be less than twice the sensitivity of the scale.
Reeb and Milota (1999) suggested oven temperature of 103±3 0C for 24 hours for optimum drying of plant samples
Reeb, J. and Milota, M. 1999. Moisture content by the ovendry method for industrial testing, Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR, WDKA, May 1999.
The rice plants at early stages of growth can be dried at 80 ºC for 24 hours, but the plants at mid to later stages of development could be dried at 80 ºC for 48 hours.
