It seems that many types of advanced treatment technologies are getting less expensive but electric energy increases in cost.
The technology that is especially becoming cheaper are equipment for online measurements and membrane technology. Therefore I think we will have more advanced treatment systems with e.g. membrane filtration that replaces simple sand filters.
More affordable measurements and control and higher energy cost will bring us to more advanced online control and constant automatic optimization in treatment systems for reduced energy consumption.
The Water Engineering and Food technology can merge together:
To provide quality & safe food and water. This perticular study related with environmental factor and soil and need of food and water based on geographical conditions.
I would say the future is understanding impacts of environmental and anthropogenic effects on our watersheds ecology and finding solution to those problems with a view to provide freshwater supply for domestic, agricultural and industrial uses as well as maintaining the water balances and the role of technology like gis and remote sensing would be much more important in future to have better understanding of water balances at large scales (continental levels)
