Hi, I want to run Multiple stress and creep recovery (MSCR) test on pen 40/50 bitumen. This test is generally conducted at the high temperature of the Superpave performance grading or PG (i.e., max pavement temperature). I do not have pen 40/50 bitumen with us so that we could do the PG. Can anyone please tell what would be the equivalent PG of the pen 40/50 binder?

Hi, please look into the our results for bitumen produced in Poland. Bitumens produced in Poland are obtained from Russia crude oil. I have attached two slides from bitumen Seminar (in Polish but the tables are clear).

Relationships between PG (MSCR) and PG (G*/sind), Pen and Vis can only be 'general'. Different grading systems can rank binders in a different order. I have recently graded a number of Australian binders with MSCR. We always start testing low and conduct the same MSCR test at ever increasing temperatures (for example, 64, 70, 76 and 82C). Then you know you will capture the PG of your binder somewhere in there. My work is not yet published but I am happy to share privately.

Dear Greg, thank you for your answer. I understand it is only a general correlation. However, we dont have the original pen 40/50 binder in our stock so that we conduct tests and determine the PG. We are actually after rutting behaviour of an already aged pen40/50 binder and make comparison with some other binders (also aged one).
I am one of the close follower of your works. I would be grateful if you please provide further information on the PG of Australian binders.

You can't really determine the equivalent without testing. The range of rheological properties for a given Pen grade is much wider than PG. Based on my limited experience with Pen 40/50, its HTPG could be 70 or perhaps 76. To run your MSCR you may try 64 or 70 as your base temperature. But, if you want to go to the trouble of doing the MSCR, why don't you just determine the HTPG as well. You have to do RTFO aging and make DSR samples, you might as well make a few extra samples and run the HT PG on both age and unaged as well. You need to do that and find the S grade and then see if it satisfies H or not. Read the following short article:

I agree with Prof. Tabatabaee. The most easiest and efficient way is to determine the HTPG as well since there is not any correlation between penetration grade and PG grade. You may guess a range, however, the exact PG grade is impossible to be determined based on penetration grade.

Thank you for responding to my question. Actually we do not have any pen 40/50 bitumen so that we could run DSR and determine its PG. Thats why I thought we might guess its PG based on the penetration value and run the MSCR. However, It is clear from the above discussion that it will be very difficult to determine PG from the pen value. Therefore, as Prof. Tabatabee and Dr. White suggested, we better run the MSCR at both 70 and 76C (or probably we start from 64C). Thanks again to shed light on the topic.
it depends on the chemical composition of the refinery product and the original crude oil ...but in most case AC 40-50 is equivalent to PG 70-16
