In order to evaluate my approach for a broadband network , I wonder what network topology to use ? for the moment I am assuming it is a Fast-tree topology using Mininet simulator for SDN environment.
I wonder how can we easily model a broadband network or simulate it ? what advices for begining computer network research ?
I think you'll find that most broadband networks to homes, I mean beyond ADSL, will use a passively split coax and fiber, or all fiber network. Search, for example, on the subject "passive optical network," or PON, and "hybrid fiber coax," or HFC. And also search under DOCSIS, to see how IP routing works in this environment.
The reason for these passive topologies is to avoid having to place a lot of active electronic components, such as layer 2 switches, throughout neighborhoods. So instead, the physical plant looks like a passively split cable TV plant. There are frequency channels assigned to downstream traffic, other frequency channels assigned to upstream traffic, the splitters are also combiners for upstream traffic, and the active electronics are only in the "optical line terminal," or OLT, which is essentially like a head end, and in individual homes.
So for instance, traffic from one home to the home next door does not go direct to the home next door, as it would in a traditional switched mesh. Instead, all traffic has to go to the OLT first, and then back downstream to the neighbor's house.
Actually ADSL is not all that different, except that there are no passive splitters. With ADSL, each home has a dedicated asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) virtual circuit (VC) to the closest telephone company central office, where that VC ends at a so-called Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). This DSLAM fills the same function as the OLT of the PON does, in passive optical networks.
Upstream of the OLT or DLSAM you will see a more traditional routed core network.
