02 February 2016 8 5K Report

We have recently started preparing the (100) surface of a new Mo crystal (8 mm dia, 2mm thick). As expected, after each round of sputtering, flashing, annealing in oxygen etc. we continue to see carbon at the surface, probably diffusing out from the bulk upon flashing to ~2000 K.

With other metals (Cu, Ag, Pt, Pd) we have observed that we get very clean surfaces after going through the appropriate preparation cycles just a couple of times, taking maybe two or three days, even with new crystals that we prepare for the first time.

Could anyone share experience on what we might have to expect in case of Mo(100)? (Weeks, months...?!) Thanks!!
