The formation of Ph.D. Design (Industrial or Visual Communication), requires research, design theories and science of design, however, these aspects are not sufficiently studied today.
Well, PhD in Design is still an open-ended discourse. There are numerous traditions and multiple epistemologies. The five must-read books which I would like to suggest for coursework in PhD in Design are:
1. The sciences of the artificial by Herbert Simon
2. The Reflective Practitioner by Donald Schon
3. Design methods: Seeds of human futures by John Christopher Jones
4. Designerly Ways of Knowing by Nigel Cross
5. The Semantic Turn by Klaus Krippendorff
Along with the above books, there are useful and meaningful contributions and articulations by contemporary scholars like Ken Friedman, Wolfgang Jonas, Kees Dorst etc. The classical texts by Christopher Alexander and Horst Rittel too cannot be missed.
One of the essential theoretical elements to study is " design Thinking." Design thinking refers to design-specific cognitive activities that designers apply during the process of designing.
Another element is to study -->what makes a Design process efficient and concurrent?" . Towards that goal, you may find the following article useful...
Article Building Blocks for a Decision Based Integrated Product Deve...
I suggest you look at DSM (Design Structure Matrix or Dependency Structure Method at dsmweb.org). DSM looks at the dependencies between design tasks, finds circuits where assumptions must be made to break circuits to initiate iteration. By putting a DSM display on everyone's desk, each person can see who they depend on, who depends of them, see where people need help, and the state of progress. During the project one can see what risks remain due to assumptions not yet verified. How does this relate to your approach?
He leído el trabajo que presentará en Universidad 2018 y en él se refiere a una publicación del 2016 acerca de la formación doctoral en diseño en Cuba. ¿Podría por favor, poner el link para legar a su lectura?. Muchas gracias.

Check out also the ecological approach to design such as the one proposed by Bill Mollison with his Permaculture concept. Also Sim van Der Ryn and Stuart Cowan's book: Ecological Design. 1996. Island press can be of value.
