in human and social sciences, to explore and to describe a cause-effect dynamics you dispose of several research approaches (ethnography, surveys, interviews, pre-existing statistical data systematization, for indeed) but to explain and understand this dynamic you will need an experimental research approach (generally based on three steps -pre-test, test, and post-test- and associating a control group). So, the matter is your aim: to explore, to describe, to explain, or to understand?
