I am working on topic: Does media glorify terrorists? its a content analysis of media coverage of terrorists on four topic categories viz. attention, recognition, justification, and criticizing government, and three slant categories viz. favorable, unfavorable, neutral . There are four news channels my study, and I want to check whether there is a difference in their coverage. I have collected the empirical data using code sheet. My IVs and DVs are categorical. Please suggest to me which tests should I apply to gauge the difference in coverage?
Who is a terrorist? How can we justify the term? These are questions that need answers before thinking of media portrayals. In the case of Sri Lanka the LTTE were not terrorists for international media. They were freedom fighters and it certainly looked as if the Sri Lankan government forces were the terrorists being hauled for war crimes! Check your channels, If Channel 4 UK is among them you may be in trouble.The test is extremely problematic thereby.
It seems like your primary IV would be the four different sources, which points to Analysis of Variance if you have interval-level DVs. Since you are using content analysis, counts of different aspects of your phenomenon would be appropriate DVs.
Dear De Alwis, by terrorists here it means, all those person, organization (be it ethnic, political or relugious), or entities or non entities which has been declared as terrorists by government of Pakistan......
Dear Morgan, ANOVA is an option when u meaaure the difference between 2+ groups/levels of an IV on a single continuous DV. But in my case both of my IVs and DVs are at categorical. I am not using any criterion score, so Chi-sq goodness of fit icannot be used. Also since i want to measure the difference in coverage, Pearson chi-sq for relatedness can also not be applied... need your guidance. ..should i only need to describe the counts instead inferential statistics. I hv studied a lot of research studies in which researchers used chi-sq.. ..but how they applied...unable to justify
Similar to Chandrika's question, what is "the media"? Is it only traditional broadcast and print media? Does it include Social Media? Bloggers? Do four news channels truly represent "the media" in terms of generalizability?
I was assuming that you would have counts of how often each source mentioned various things about terrorism, and that these would serve as the DVs. Can you share some examples of what your DVs are and how they are measured?
