What techniques can be used for the evaluation of microleakage of dental materials, for example, filling, obturation etc.
You can use confocal microscopy to observe microleackage.
Cheaper method is observation a cutted sample under optical microscope, to see how deep dye has penetrated in a sample, after storage in dye solution.
Use Bitplane imaris to image the confocal images will give you excellent 3D representation. or
µCT, get a micro CT done ,

first one should know the mechanism behind such leakage (or migration?) (porosity, cracks,...), than is it a time dependent?. I think that any technique used to study the crack formation in polymers and polymer composites will be suitable in this analysis. Regards

Microleakage has very limited clinical relevance. We know that it is probably not related to secondary caries and only has marginal discoloration as a possible effect, which is not a reason to intervene (except when esthetic demands from the patients are there)
I know from several editors that microleakage studies are often not considered for publication at all, except when it the study also has some other outcomes to compare. So be careful in doing these studies if you want to publish........
Completely agree with Prof. Opdam. I think the nanoleakage is much better option to study

Again I completely agree with you Prof. Opdam, however in vitro techniques need to try to understand what happens in the clinic, which test you suggest that ought to be used to evaluate dental materials?
The most important reasons for failure of restoration are fracture and caries, and knowing that caries is related predominantly to the patients caries risk, in-situ studies and artificial mouth studies on caries can tell us relevant things like the influence of materials on caries. however, these studies are difficult to do.
Fracture is related to people clenching and grinding, so cyclic loading tests are probably relevant for predicting clinical fracture.
Various Microleakage methods are - dye penetration and microscopic examination, chemical tracers, bacterial leakage tests, radioactive isotopes, air pressure method, fluid filtration method, neutron activation analysis, artificial caries, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fluorescent microscopy etc.
And my opinion is not all in vitro tests are bad. Best part is except the variable that is to be studied, all other things can be standardized. No doubt these tests should be accompanied with clinical studies.
