For me, I currently teach in a university specialized in petroleum studies, I constantly introduce innovations and curricular changes to the courses I teach in order to meet the dynamic needs of the petroleum industry. The innovations/curricular changes I have introduced in the courses I teach include:
(i) Student to lecturer interaction
(ii) Student to student interaction
(iii) Paradigm shift from the use of classical techniques to global computing techniques.
I also introduce mini projects that offer students opportunity to visit the industry to identify problems, apply scientific/engineering techniques to proffer solution to such problems and present findings in class for open interaction.
While I make use of technology and teach my students about how to use it in their research and work, I try to introduce new and expanded methods to enhance critical thinking in my students. I use a lot of structured essays and directed research. My students are encouraged to compete in academic poster and paper competitions with other universities. They are also encouraged to review books and write a book review for possible publication.
Thank you very much for your detailed feedback. Introducing new and expanded methods is a good way of enhancing students critical thinking. By also encouraging students to compete in academic poster and paper presentation with other universities is a laudable concept. Am glad to read from you.
Additionally, I use some techniques that elicit reflection, so it is teaching/learning that responds to cultural background as well. I use my own concept of portfolio that possesses concrete components mentioned in my book Transformative creativity in teacher formation, A pedagogical approach. I apply journal of reflection, reflective journal, reflective story telling and others. I create my own formats of lessons that comprises theme, goal, objectives (cognitive, practical, and social -cultural), assumed effects, contents etc...that refer to creative aspects of educational goals and pedagogical reflection on intra and interpersonal level. Students add own creative pieces of work: poems, essays. I try to make them conscious that thy can face challenges and creatively solve problems, as they are creative. Fostering creative thinking that comprises critical one is necessary. I try to "force" them to read and transfer the items into reflective and creative area of practice.
