During the process of inscription of FBG on the silica/glass optical fiber few centimeters of the fiber had to be stripped. Bare fiber is too fragile for mechanical measurements, so I thought about recoating it. Unfortunately - I don't have an access to a recoater.
Is there any chemical solution I can use for DIY recoating purpose?
I believe different polymers that can be applied to the silica glass can be used. Unfortunately, you will have no control over the coating thickness, you will not know the properties of the buffer layer and you will not know the influence on the FBG.

I can see how important these properties are. Buffering will have to be investigated.
Moreover, the ununiform thickness of the coating means also changes of the Young's modulus on the length of the fiber (and also FBG). In this case, even for a simple axial tension of a fiber, a strain gradient along the FBG will occur. For sure it will influence the optical spectrum of the FBG.
In our last experiment, we used PMMA as a coating for the FBG sensor. However, the low thickness of the PMMA layer did not affect the principle of operation of our sensor:

Thank you for your answers. Finally, I've decided to work with bare fibers, although they are fragile. On the other hand, further tests may require re-coating to increase its strength.

I use FBGs inscribed on SMF28 fiber (or different with high index coating) for strain sensing. It means I cannot cover grating with a sleeve.
A UV-curable coating material seems to be a much better option. It was designed for this purpose. I think I will try one in the future.

I can see on microscopic images from your article that the PMMA layer is smooth and well adhered to fiber. It is also interesting solution.
