Nonverbal communication is another way of sending communication messages, including body, voice, location, body movements, facial expressions, eye, sound coloration, silence, and other senses. Listening - the right expression and expanding relationships with others. In short, all strategies based on cooperation can have an effective role for these skills.

I'm not sure if you're asking about teaching students about communication or teaching students how to actually improve their own communications skills. If the former, certainly textbooks and illustrations can be quite effective. However, if you are looking to find ways to help students more effectively communicate, the biggest factor I have seen working well is simply recognizing that different people communicate different ways. In other words, if you're trying to get an individual to effectively communicate by modeling and teaching one way, such as an oral presentation, you might be missing an opportunity for that student to communicate and express themselves in different ways. Something as simple as allowing a student in an oral presentation class to present using a video can have a profound affect on the student and give them quite a boost to their self-confidence. Once students see and truly understand that there is not one "right" way to communicate, they often can observe and learn different ways to communicate -- and find what way works most effectively for them.

I think when it comes to developing communication skills, the most important factor to take into consideration is students' needs and age group. What this implies is that strategies used to develop communication skills for Young Learners will evidently be different from those used with adult learners. Another important question is, are you aiming to develop verbal or non verbal communication?

Authenticity is the key word that should answer your question. Providing students with authentic situations where they would be required to communicate for a real, authentic purpose is important not just because it prepares them to real life but it helps great deal when students do not feel patronized.

For so many teachers the only resource they have is the textbook. In such cases, I believe teachers will need to uplift the content and localize it in order to fit into learners needs as many of the textbooks are of generic and international nature.

Among the many strategies, making my ESL classroom a venue for English language acquisition and learning is the one I find very effective. By merely making English a tool for communication/engaging them into practical writing and speaking tasks, they unconsciously practice the language with fun.

In my opinion offer group presentations and assignments is an effective strategy for improving students communication skills. Team-building exercises can also help students sharpen both oral and written communication skills. Not only does it offer students the chance to work in small groups, thereby reducing some of the pressure, but it also gives them the opportunity to debate their opinions, take turns, and work together towards a common goal.

Shallow persons often take communication for granted since they think that the human beings constantly communicate by receiving or giving information. We have a university one hour- credit requisite course entitled "Leadership & Communication Skills" but many students do not take it seriously since nearly all of them find it an easy one.

However, the inability to apply strong communication skills, in life, can lead to failure in relationships & careers.

We always see wise cool persons who master the art of verbal communication by choosing the proper clear spoken words with others (either face-to-face or remotely). On the other hand, there are persons who lack the art of communicating with others turning a simple conversation into an intense one with a possibility of instigating a row. The two types are found in the staff of an academic institution with the second type causing harm to the colleagues & affecting the educational process's environment negatively.

In lectures, a university teacher is supposed to apply verbal communication very well otherwise the outcome will be very poor, indeed. What aids, in success of this type of communication, is to pair it up with nonverbal means of communication such as facial expressions & hand gestures. "For about 5 years, I was a customer of a barbershop in Great Britain that was owned by a friendly "talkative :)" Italian. He was really genius in delivering his massages using his face & hands". I think a teacher will do well if s/he acts like the Italians.

Visual aids are good types of communication that can help a lot in teaching. Simple drawings, maps, schematic diagrams, and graphics can convey messages more than thousands of words.

Let them write, talk in person... and cut on cellphones, emojis, memos and all pictograms, even on PPT presentations...

Have the students talk in front of others - choose a topic (in the beginning an easy one, gradually make it harder).

Explicitly teaching discourse skills using easy topics and slowly increasing the level of difficulty and disagreement inherent in the topic. Giving them a checklist of how to speak, how to listen, then have them self evaluate.

In my class I encourage them to think about what they want to say first, so when they are ready to speak they have clear thoughts that others may understand better.

I also emphasize using using the best medium. Would it be better to send an email or use verbal communication?

They should also consider the person/s receiving the message. Communicate in an interesting and meaningful way so to keep their attention.

Finally, say what you mean and mean what you say. Be honest and clear with your message.
