Using social media not only brings current technology to the classroom, but it also helps bridge the digital divide among lower-income students. Encouraging students to interact with others via social media by posting their favorite quotes or facts from a particular lesson brings students together and facilitates interaction with other students and with their tutors through questions, comments and participation. But social media is viewed by some educators as a distraction. What strategies can the teacher follow to enable social media develop students' understanding and achievements rather than distracting them?
It's possible to use social media in the classroom. One approach is to have students curate a list of favorite posts, tweets, and social media accounts as part of an individual or group project. This is especially helpful for updating a business case assignment, or doing a business plan assignment. Twitter is a good platform for this, as students could create a new account specifically for the class if they don't want to use their personal social media account.
