There is so much software and compute opportunity growing in our world right now... I will offer my personal favorites.

For a high level language, it's Python of course.

I foremost suggest Geographical Information System software, such as ESRI's ArcGIS or QGIS, for mapping and creating spatial databases; and Raster Imagery software, such as Erdas Imagine or ENVI by Harris Geospatial, to allow remote sensing.

Software applications in agriculture involve a collaborative effort of many disciplines and a systems research view is basic.

The question posed by you is very general. In my opinion, the title of the course you are teaching should be re-considered, with due respect to your education system. It should be taught by specific departments thus the students know only those applications which only they will need. There are so many applications and software used in the field of AGRICULTURE (both in Plant Protection and Plant Production, Animal Husbandry etc) that if you only enlist them to your students, it will be an information hard to swallow.

Here are very few examples from Plant Protection.

1. Taxonomy: software for capturing and editing images (e,g. PHOTOSCAPE, AUTOMONTAGE etc)

2. Experimentations: vast variety of statistical softwares (e,g. Graphprism, Statisitx, Sigmaplot etc)

3. Molecular: analyzing your sequences (e,g. Bioedit, MEGA etc)

4. Pest Warning: GIS and GPS software

Silicon based computational technology is used in modern agriculture with great positive effect. Not by just processing software in digital space; rather a physical computer is an interface module, allowing integration of digital software, electronic sensing, and robotic artifact, all operating as part of our defacto cybernetic environment.

Agricultural compute enables a construct for simulation, management and bio-informatics, creating a classification of material knowledge. Right now, people drive compute and design electronica to support an anthropogenic selection of biological productivity.

Software is information, typically thought of as program code for computer to execute, however I consider biological information coding, such as DNA, to be a biological software, thus executed by wet-carbon machines. Therefore, genetic molecular technologies are an important consideration in understanding current and future agricultural computing.

If I were a farmer, I would generally use mapping compute for my assets, management decision support modeling for my actions, and I would fly a micro-drone service for my situational awareness. (While I am dreaming, I would use auto-steering tractors with robotic weeding and harvesting.) I suppose a modern farmer would be wise to include commodity and financial compute.
