If you have any intension to write a good REVIEW ARTICLE on the topic or subject on which you are working for a long time, you may have to refer your related previous publications. It is given importance by most of the journal authorities.

In our journal, we generally do not entertain any author of review article who has no previous in hand working experience on the subject of the review article. It is understood by his/ her related publications.

How will you evaluate such references? Self plagiarism?

In my latest published article (a review article), published in a journal of Benthamscience, a total of 10 of my previous publications on the related topic was included among a total of 148 references.

I think there is any serious issue on this but as a matter of compulsion, you must give proper citation. Also, you must exercise caution not to just cite your previous paper but when needed.

I think this is an important challenge most student face and many institutions are turning a blind eyes to it... how do you expect a student to paraphrase his own work...

It is a typical 'silly' (unwanted) side effect of exponential knowledge automation systems like turnitin, functioning as 'canonical authority'.

@Shibabrata made a strong point, refering to the familiarity with author and topic, working as 'automation control modus'. I would 'turn' directly to 'turnitin' and ask them, which writing technique can be applied to avoid this 'idiotic trap' of expert automation. Finally, maybe some artist could create a cartoon on this funny situation.

Am agree with Shibabrata Pattanayak, when you are having adequate knowledge, in particular, filed and did work in this, I personally don’t think so you must worried about it . One more thing as we are in the era of AI these kind of plagiarism issues are most common.

My question is that I have my thesis write up just completed and one of the criteria for final submission in the institution is to carry out turnitin on the same thesis write up. I am also expected to have published three full papers at least from the same research (write up). Now I have published 3 papers from the work. Trying to carry out turnitin on the thesis gave me 5% similarity index (plagiarism) from my own work. My question is what do you think I should do

I should think you are within the acceptable range for your institution but I am sure proper citation or slight turn-arounds should easily work the items out if you have to do that. Keep up the good work.

The real problem, if you work with a subject with more result and you have to write 03 or 04 articles. Whatever your attention, you will rewrite sentences and explanations. The answer is question : Should I find a new co-author who will write the paper with his style?

These plagiarism checkers can be funny sometimes. I think 5% is not bad, save that the overall result may jump when put together.

My candid advise is that you treat your previous work just the same way you treated those of other authors. Yes! Who says you cannot give yourself credit as an author?

Therefore, cite your work same way you cite other research works and see how the result would like when you rescan.

Five percent (5%) from your work is ok. However if the total percentage (i.e. yours and others put together for the same paper ) is beyond 15%, then you need to worry about it. You can recast the sentences and rearrange the words to give the same meanings more especially when the data are the same. It has worked for me. Good luck.

It is well known that if you can change the language (words) of the copied portion from articles, plagiarism software will fail to detect it.

Those persons having good control over use of English language, they do not bother about plagiarism issue.

To solve the problem, you change the language keeping the sense and meaning intact, then it will come to 0%.

I think most of us tend to use one research forr several publications. It is indeed possible tk look at one research question from different perspectives..and conducting a research is an expensive and time consuming process. I think 5% of self plagiarism is totally acceptable.
