My discovery is that so many people struggle with research because here in this part of the world, it was never introduced at an early stage and with the practical backing. It is only when the student get to project stage that they begin to learn the skill. What do you think can be done?

In primary school, it is difficult to create such sense but it is enough to stimulate primary school student just to collect samples of trees leaves for example meanwhile, in university undergraduate students the situation is completely different !! I always asking 4th stage student to submit a project with the same structure of scientific research and some of them are/were exhibiting excellent skills in doing such activities.

It is very important to introduce these research skills to the students especially at undergraduate levels(lower levels). This will help them when they eventually get to their final year are face with research work before graduating.
Summarily, it should be introduced earlier before getting to the final year.

You are quite right and I think at the tender age you mention, stimulating inquisitiveness and a questioning mind and ensuring answers and solutions are tested and not just accepted could spark the match. At higher levels, we need radical overhaul, institution of a proper rigorous research culture, insistence on the value and integrity of intellectual property, combat plagiarism + “research” by proxy, ensuring researches solve problems / fill gaps/ are socially or economically relevant would begin a process and maybe be on the right track.

You have certainly broached up a very insightful question.Indubitably, Children have fantastic capacities and experiences profoundly influencing their formative years in enduring ways. From early childhood when they start to develop their knowledge of the material world , children begin asking questions about various things in their surroundings. They use their experiences as touchstones for improving their wisdom and intellectual powers.Since research is defined as finding answers to questions about specific phenomena, we could say that research literacy from early childhood can have a remarkable influence on the academic demands made on children on later years in their lives. The main point is that the teachers involved in the task should know that primary children are very positive about hands-on experiences and appear to have opportunities to engage in such activities by applying a range of practical skills. In general, children like to work collaboratively in small groups when they conduct hands-on activities. The majority of children enjoy working in this way. Therefore, teaching research to children should enlist those pedagogical techniques that befit their age level and preferences.

Thanks Sirs for those enlightenment on the way forward in instilling research culture in our pupils at such an age and stage
I agree with Drs. Ajayi, Biria and Emad.
But if I am to zero down to Nigeria, we need to change to functional education and also move from teacher-centered learning to pupil/student centered learning.
