I'm going to synthesize carbon layers by CVD and methane is the one I want to handle for the source of carbon. My plan is to make it continuously flow in a furnace at a temperature of 900 ℃ for at least 3 hours under atmospheric pressure.
However, I've never had an experience in dealing with methane. I'm wondering if it will be safe when I use it in that way. I think emittance of explosive gases, flow rate and so forth are very important to consider.
Please, give me advices. I need your help..
You will have to be extremely careful to exclude the possibility of any oxygen entering the furnace with either the methane or the ammonia at that temperature. You therefore will need a way to purge the system with something like Ar prior to starting the flow of methane. Be careful if you decide to use nitrogen instead because it often contains oxygen as a contaminant. You will also need to check the fittings on all of your lines to confirm that there is not chance of air entering the lines. Since are working at atmospheric pressure, don't count on slight positive pressure keeping the air out of the lines. It only takes a small diffusion leak to create a major problem.
You will also need to decide what you are going to do with the methane and ammonia as it exits the furnace. Burning is one option if the flow rate is not very large. Simply venting the gas could create the potential for an explosive mixture in your vent system.
I studied at 1300-1500 C with pure hydrogen, hydrogen+ammonia, hydrogen+argon, acetylene+hydrogen eg.. In reactor, pressure should not be and gasses should be exhausted easily. And also, internal gas pressure should be controlled. Reactor should be carefully isolated in order to detain oxygen from air atmosphere. Exhausted gases should be rapidly removed from laboratory
