I will use quantitative and qualitative research simultaneously to design a research in which I give equal importance to both. How should I determine the sample size? How many people? For example, in a quantitative study with 350 people, with whom of 350 people at the same time? according to what? v should I do qualitative work with other people?
In a quantitative approach, your sample size will be determined by the margins of error you admit and/or by representativeness or significantness considerations.
In the qualitative approach, you have no such constrains and your sampling is way more flexible. You can decide to consider "interesting" or "extreme" individuals, etc.
The difficulty with doing a study following the design you propose is that it is indeed likely to require more than two hundred participants to get significant results for the survey, but this will generate an overwhelming amount of qualitative data if you ask more than two or three brief open-ended questions.
Another alternative would be an "explanatory sequential" design, where you would first produce the quantitative results, and then select a small subset of the original survey respondents to participate in semi-structured qualitative interviews, to help you understand the original results in more depth and detail.
For my dissertation, I first chose the statistical community according to Cochran's formula. Then I selected the most important qualitative factor according to Likert survey questions in semi-structured qualitative interviews. Then I evaluated the factor that was quantifiable. The pre-test was of particular importance in both tests.
Thanks. In this case, let's say I did a quantitative survey with 300 people. How many people and how should I choose my qualitative research from the same 300 people? For me the difficulty of achieving the same sampling for the second time was the difficulty, so I wanted to do so simultaneously. For an explanatory sequential design, the most effective approach is to produce your quantitative results and then select your qualitative sample in a way that will help you understand what you learned from your quantitative data.
If you do not have the time or resources to do that, then you could shift to a "complementary" design where each portion of the project serves a different purpose. In that case, you might well want to concentrate on the R & D department, but that depends on the purposes of your overall project.
