Every journal established the minimum words required for a paper to be accepted for publication. there are journals that ask for a minimum of 5,000 or 6,000 words' there those who ask for more or for less. The journals that do not specify the number of words required for a research article, usually intend that the paper will be at least 3,500 words. Also, there are various types of papers. The most common is the manuscript, but there is the "brief communication" type of paper that demand only 2,000 words, and book reviews that demand even less.

Each journal has their own criteria for number of pages. But usually the journals refer to as number of words, instead of number of pages. There are many ISI indexed journals, where they have different word limits and even some journal wont have any limitations. And few journals have a different limitations for original articles and for review articles.

Most top journals are interested in the novelty of work while word counts (usually 4000 - 5000+) matter at times to reduce journal spacing.

Authors are not usually restricted to a definite number of pages except in some very few journals. I'll advice that a perusal of your chosen journal's guidelines will really help. The key is that you should try and make your manuscript succinct without leaving out the important findings.

Reputed and high impact factor journals are interested in the novelty of work. Manuscripts should have novelty and results are summarised briefly around average 4500 words limit. But kindly read the author guidelines of the journals before submission.

It is rare to see any publisher requesting for pages, however, word count is the common request in the author instructions which ranges between 3000-6000 words for original article. 30-40 references specified along and different number of tables/graphs/images, most times 4-6 in number.

All in all, this most times ranges between 10-14 pages, and so requested in very few publishers.

Your findings is mostly important to the editor. Most peer-review journals have specifications depending on the space allocated to them by the publishers... This is reducing gradually compared to few years back due to the need arising from other upcoming journals.

Generally, short communication required not more than 3000 words and less or equal to 20 references. While a review article could accommodate more than 7000 words, original research stands between 3000 - 5000 words with relevant references not exceeding 50. All these are still based on the journal, because it varies widely.

One of the most famous paper in the history of science publishes in Nature had only 1 and 1/4 pages: Watson J.D. and Crick F.H.: A structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid, Nature 171: 737-738, 1953.

Omolayo M. Ikumapayi One more thing to be added is that, I don't know if anyone has also noticed that, if pages of a paper are far less, say 5-6, it attracts higher rate of acceptance. In fact, most times paper is not only rejected based on novelty but against the volume which it would occupy in publishers' compilation. Although, "there is no rule to say that science cannot be entertaining. Editors want their journal to be pleasurable and enlightening reading", even though, it is still advisable to cut one's reporting short to aid its acceptance considering the space required for the publishers. I always advise people to do away with verbose reporting, except if it is otherwise necessary.

Re-submitting papers to another journal, after rejection by one, is very strenuous considering difference in style from journal to journal which may require modifications before one can submit to other journals. One could imagine removing up to 10 references to suit a new journal, this may reduce coherence/ease of readability of a paper. So, it is advisable to cut the 'story' short from the beginning to lessen one's stress.

Instructions are available for every journal. You have to follow the instructions but at the end its not about pages but content that makes real impact.

Basically it depends on number of words. Around 4000-500 is okay, but it varies. Respective Journal's guideline can be seen. Anyway, on special case sometimes a 1-2 page(s) article can also be published in high impact journal.

It is definitely subject related matter. Say for example, in pure and life sciences, 5000 on average would be accepted. Bear in mind, figures and Table not included as well as any supplementary materials.

It depends on the particular Journal you want to publish your article. Every Journal has specific guides for authors: the required number of pages, word counts in the abstract, and the referencing style etc.

Between 10-13 (rarely up to 15) for research article but more for the reviews. Too many pages is one of those factors for rejection.

I have seen a five-page paper published in a standard and refereed journal in my field before. I think it's about the quality of the content and not the quantity!

I think it depends mainly on the journal policy but in general the number of pages is up to five and above and there are some journals put a ceiling or even a minimum limit to the pages of the research. However, the quality of work remains the basis for the publication of the scientific research, not quantity..... with my best wishes

No specificity. It depends on several factors including types of article e.g Case report vs. Review Article vs. Short Communication. Also, it depends on journal. I read from a journal author instruction page today where it is specified for Research Article, word count between 5000-8000, and even makes it compulsory that the words must not be less than 5000 . Whereas, many journals have used previously limit their words not more than 5000 (that is, maximum number of 5000), even many peg it at 3000 words. Therefore, it is not a number of pages but these factors, and more.

The number of pages allowed depends on the journal that is published mainly. There are magazines that limit the number to only 15 pages, and there are magazines that charge an additional fee per page exceeding the allowed number and so on.

We cannot talk about pages (or length of an article) without considering the type of an article. Original article is usually moderate, Review article is lengthy, Case Report, Short Communication and Letter to the Editor are all short. In addition, journal specification is the line to ply. Some journals even require you to make it more than you may expect, while quite majority of journals specify less. In summary, no specific number pages one can suggest without considering the above-mentioned points.

The monographs have no limit of pages in taxonomy journals. The technical notes are generally of few pages, and the scientific articles depend on the magazine, I prefer in open access journals, because they do not charge.

I agree with Luis Miguel. Someone of course doesn't have to pay money and to wait too long time for his article to be published (the case of high impact factor journals), to be a good scientist..! There are too many excellent articles in open access journals.

The journal establishes its own rules, which the author must follow if he wants to publish in this journal. On the other hand, the volume of the article is not so important as its compliance to general requirements for scientific publication. If this text has a literary review, statement of the problem, presentation of the solution and conclusions, then it is extremely difficult to compress the text to a small volume, most likely the author is satisfied with the result when he "fits" into the upper limit. “Follow the rule stubbornly: To keep words close, Thoughts are spacious” - this of course sounds beautiful, but not many authors can hone every phrase as even N. Nekrasov (Russian poet) did. In general, I saw a dissertation of 12 pages (the usual norm is about 150) and it passed unanimously, but the author is almost a genius.

Certainly, it will depend upon the criteria of the journal. But in true sense, your message should be clear with in 5-7 pages excluding the references section. High impact factor journals also prefer the conceptual note, if it takes more number of pages one can go for that but not in overlapping manner.

Almost all journals commonly accept a manuscript of 3000- 4000 words with 30 references , but whenever we talk about acceptance of manuscript in high impact journals , research quality &novelity matters more than just number of words .
