North Korea has developed nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles for the last few decades, and their tests seem successful to a certain degree. North Korea’ such movement is a great threat to the United States and many other countries including South Korea, Japan, China, and Russia.
Given such situation, what do you think the best approach to solve North Korea’s such threat to the world? Of course, one option is to just let North Korea have nuclear weapons and ICBM just like India, Pakistan, and Israel. Do you think it is viable option at this point?
If you believe that we should not let North Korea have nuke attack capability, how do you think we can stop them? We can keep working on economic sanctions against North Korea by hoping that North Korea comes to peace dialog with the United States. Other thing on the table may be to use U.S. military power against North Korea. In this case, you can choose either surgical strikes on nuclear test sites and ballistic missile launching sites or a full-scale war against North Korea. If you prefer military actions, which one do you like and why?
Another question is related to South Korean government approach to reduce the tension in Korean peninsula. South Korean government has invited top ranking North Korean officials to 2018 Winter Olympics held in South Korea to make it an opportunity for peach talk between North and South Korea. Do you think South Korean government’s effort to start peace talk is premature as the United Nations has put on economic sanctions against North Korean regime? Or do you support such South Korean government efforts? And why is your answer is yes or no?
The issue of North Korea nuclear development remained a hard situation for US and neighboring countries for decades, and one must not underrate the danger of the consequences of it. First, it seems exaggerated by concluding that N. Korea has become a full nuclear state; such clarity is a big obstacle for a precise solution. However, evaluating the scenario holistically, the best way is to assume that North Korea is already possessed or has capacity to possess nuclear weapon. Second, any target by US and her allies will not yield good result. One should remember that nuclear strike among country that possesses it resulted in “Mutual Assured Destruction” (MAD). In other words, in which a full-scale use of nuclear weapons by two or more opposing sides would cause the complete annihilation of both the attacker and the defender. Especially, to her neighboring states like; S. Korea, Japan, Taiwan and even China. As a result, the only adequate and viable solution is a diplomatic measure through appealing N. Korea with attractive incentives to convince her to abandon or destroy the nuclear weapon, followed by promising long time economic benefits.

A question, however, still remains. Will N. Korea abandon her nuclear weapon, although the U.S. and her allies offer the incentives? N. Korea believes that the nuclear weapon protects Kim Jung Eun's regime and they have worked very hard to develop it for the last few decades. As a result, many people are skeptical about the idea that N. Korea will destroy her nuclear weapon in spite of such a diplomatic approach by the U.S. and her allies.

Of course, there is no single answer to the question. But you can try to answer the question, based on the solution of the problem that causes the need for North Korea weapons. Another approach may be based on lowering the level of motivation - engaging in cooperation, reducing the level of hostility, increasing the level of mutual trust and predictability. This is not a fast path, but still this path can be reversible unlike the military method of solving the problem.

If the problem is that simple, it should have been already solved. Former South Korean governments have had attempted the approach that you recommended for more than ten years. Those governments had offered peace dialogues and economic assistance to North Korea, which was called "sunshine" policy. Unfortunately, North Korean apparently have worked very hard to develop nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs while the peace dialogues were going on. You may suggest that South Korea has to continue the peace talks and economic assistance to North Korea. Well, I have not much confidence that it will work.
