I think it can be strong evidence depending on the what law is being broken and the evidence required to prove a violation. If you mean aerial photography or remotely sensed data that shows oil spills, natural gas leaks, road building in restricted areas, etc, then all of this could be used...at least in the US. As an example see the following maps on the location of injection wells and fault lines in Oklahoma. Evidence is mounting that these wells are causing earthquakes. If a lawsuit were filed, I would think the maps shown below could be used as evidence....

Geo scientific results are full proof evidences for Environmental pollution due to Oil and Gas and various other.Such Results help to find out the sources and serious ness of Anthropogenic pollution. Obtained Results if come out to masses , may create mass awareness and force to take serious action to control the pollution.
The role of geo-scientific evidences no doubt will facilitate positive litigation, noting the great benefits derivable from environmental baseline studies and environmental impacts assessment. Deviations of environmental conditions from those established by baseline will suggest potential sources of pollution.
Regarding the case cited above by Kenneth, the environmental status certainly will be established prior to consciously and articulated capture and storage programme. Where pollution arises from this, the one(s) that activated the storage, become the defendant(s).
