Given that human beings are complex beings and often do not exhaust all means to improve a relationship, I wonder what role does emotional intelligence have in the happiness of people in the 21st century
Emotional intelligence is another aspect of intellective ability. According to Daniel Goleman, emotional intelligence refers to a cluster of qualities relating to the feeling side of life including an understanding one’s own feelings, empathy for others, and the regulation of emotions to enhance living (Goleman, 1995). A person with high emotional intelligence would be able to engage in such behaviours as sizing up people, pleasing others, and influencing them (DuBrin, 1997). It is a special type of human intelligence by which a person can use his or her emotions effectively. It consists of a set of sub mental abilities which enable a person to perceive, understand and regulate emotions in himself or herself and in other people. According to the theory of emotional intelligence, emotions make cognitive processes adaptive and individual can think rationally about emotions (Brackett et al, 2011 as in Weragoda and Opatha, 2015). Key components included in emotional intelligence are as follows (DuBrin, 1997, p. 25):
1. Self-awareness: understanding one’s feelings and using intuition to make decisions he or she can live happily.
2. Management of feelings: controlling impulsiveness, calming anxiety, and reacting with appropriate anger to situations.
3. Motivation: drive, persistence, and optimism when faced with setbacks. (In the context of emotional intelligence motivation is resiliency.)
4. Empathy: understanding and responding to the unspoken feelings of others.
5. Social skill: dealing effectively with emotional reactions in others, having smooth interactions with others, and having positive relationships with people.
The above mentioned components of emotional intelligence will enable a person to develop and enhance good long lasting interpersonal relationships. Growing evidence indicates that emotional intelligence is very valuable in organizational behaviour.
Thus, it is a major driver of Happiness of the people in the 21st century.
When I thought about this thought provoking question, I was unsure of the difference between emotional intelligence and emotional competence. I had a vague feeling that the first preceded the second.
I found a paper on ResearchGate that was relevant to my thoughts about this:
Article Emotional Intelligence versus Emotional Competence
by Sebastian Vaida
I think that we need to understand our own emotions and also those of others (display empathy?) I feel that words (and actions) often come before the we have stopped to think and reason with ourselves.
I agree with Ximena Verónica Calderón Baltierra that emotional intelligence definitely has a place in achieving happiness, now, as it did in the past and will do in the future.
The more I write, the less I feel I comprehend about this, so am looking forward to reading the responses of others.
Emotional intelligence provides inertia to build momentum even in grey days of life. The happiness is the outsource expressions of the inner satisfaction. The paramount traits which bridge the gap between emotional intelligence and happiness are: predictive emotions, controlled intelligence, emotional management, and cognitive intelligence.

I think emotional Intelligence as a way was always there. Daniel Goleman built a theory around it and provivded a systematic approach to understanding it.
The core question is actually the ability to modify and mold the behavior of an individual to make him or her better.
