We are working on the mathematical modeling of the decomposition of organic residues for the realization of a reactor that produces a stable product in a short period of time (from 1 to 3 days). Thank you
Diego Betancourt, it depends on how you look at the situation. We go over this in our exhaustive review on composting modelling :Article A review of mathematical models for composting
)
Mechanistic (based on theory) composting models are usually based on first-order degradation kinetics or Monod-type kinetics (Monod, Tessier, Contois). These expression can be written as follows:
First-order: -dS/dt = k*S
Monod: -dS/dt = (μ max*S)/(KS + S) * X/YS
In both these cases, S represents your substrate. Your degradation rate will mainly be based on kinetic parameters (k for first-order or μ max for Monod). These parameters will vary as a function of a variety of operating variables, such as temperature, oxygen, moisture content and pH. Therefore, if you know these kinetic parameters, you can model the composting process over any time frame, be it 24-72 hours or 12 months. So, technically, I have no doubt that most mechanistic composting models could be applied to a very short composting process, assuming they are properly calibrated for the situation.
However, to my knowledge and as highlighted in the responses to your previous question on short-duration composting, there seems to have been minimal work published in this area. Therefore, I doubt there are (and am unaware of) any models specifically applied to very short term composting, though that does not mean that current models cannot be applied.
Whether applying a composting model to such a short term process is novel or not remains to be seen, depending on your experimental results. From my understanding of your project, the reactor design is what would be innovative. If you find that your degradation follows a first-order reaction (which has often been the case, though it may be very different in your process), then you can work out what degradation rate (k) you would need to achieve your desired results in whatever time frame you want.
