I need to divide a sample group between new and experienced nurses. How can I define exactly how much years of experience one and other kind of nurses? I would like to use a reference that clarify this point. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Jose, the original work that was done to define Novice nurse vs competent nurse and so forth was Patricia Benner's from Novice to Expert. The book came out some time in 1986.
I agree with Melissa Barthold. She suggested relevant references. You may also refer to the following materials:

I attached framework developed from study findings on redefined nurses' role and scope of practice in the Philippines. Hope attachment is relevant to your study. Best wishes.
I think you should look at Patricia Benner's seminal work on this topic when she was teaching at the University of California, San Francisco. I believe her articles do give both conceptual and operational definitions of a novice to expert nurse. She does have her own publications on the topic. She is the expert on this topic.
I agree with our colleagues who suggested to look at Patricia Benner's novice to expert model. The Benner’s novice to expert model includes five levels of practice (novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient and expert) where nurses are situated in the performance of roles. Each level of practice is differentiated from the previous levels by hierarchy of thinking, judgment, behavior and experience. I attached Framework on Levels and Role Expectations and Education Trajectory For Nurse Practitioner in the Philippines. This framework is based on the findings of my study on Redefined Nurses’ Roles and Scope of Practice: Basis for Innovations in Managing Nursing Graduate Education.
One of the aspects that it considers most relevant in the study of Patricia Benner is to fit a logical research practice to emerging theory; results emerge from practice to provide a theoretical explanation of what nurses actually do.
I fully agree with the study by Benner to answer the initial question.
