As you are taking responsibility for the originality and contents of your thesis, you write "I found...". However, if you have written a joint paper with your supervisor or colleague, when you cite it, you will switch temporarily and write "We showed...".

Passive tense could avoid this, but then the reader has no idea of who did that bit or who can lay claim to it. So modern practice is to use the active voice for clarity.

It depends on the guidelines of your university

Is it important to stress to the reader that it was you (or your colleagues) who wrote the papers or do you want to stress your findings? This may decide which voice to adopt.

Passive / active voice also depends on the guidelines of your target journals and your research supervisor' whims. Check these first so that you do not waste time re-editing. There is no point in wasting energy in being an active voice activist!

Passive stance is advisable afterall your name and supervisors are fully disclosed within the first pages of the Thesis.

My preference is to use third person in academic writing, which removes the question of using the singular or plural first person.

And for the record, you can use Active Voice with either first person or third person, and active voice is the stronger use of language.

Strong: The researcher developed the survey.....

Opinions differ, even within a particular field of study. My opinion is that technical writing should be scrupulously accurate. Moreover, in the case of a thesis, your readers will want to know which elements came from you alone, rather than your advisor or collaborators.

Use the first person plural only where the singular would be inaccurate, and avoid the first person singular or plural wherever you can.

Even the use of "we" is not acceptable. You should not write from a first-person perspective at all, as at some point, this will cause you problems, potentially at your thesis defense if your committee and supervisor overlook this. In the natural science, I am not sure what the standards are on this, but I do not recall ever coming across the first-person writing style, as I would notice it based upon rigorously enforcing this as an instructor over thousands of undergrad essays.

It would appear that we are living in a world where norms and conventions are being put in a place where they rightly belong. In the bin. That is not as extreme as it sounds, and needs more explanation than I have time for at the moment. Suffice to say, write the PhD in a conservative style and get the qualification. Then if you are still passionate about your field of study then write your book in your style. In both cases though, remember the most important person in written communication is the reader. Keep focussed on them. And for a PhD, your first critical readers will be, or should be, your supervisors.

There's a fundamental difference between writing subjectively and using active voice. Researchers should avoid the former. Using active voice is recommended to help the readers distinguish what you borrowed from literature and what you have done. My chair said I should not refer to myself so much, i.e., "the researcher," but APA suggests avoiding passive sentences, so balancing this is a real challenge. Also, I am told that I cannot say things like, "the research shows..." because research is not a person. It's all quite confusing, so this is a combination of my reply to the question and a new question. My question is: In what other ways can I refer to the work done by the researcher without using passive sentences? My reply to the above question is that it sounds like you need to talk this over with your chair, as they all seem to have different requirements.

we is used to refer both the author/s and the reader. e.g. When we think the human population increase as the biggest issue,

The general rule is to avoid any subjectivism, so bring in the objects into the active constructions and maybe some pronouns

"Our research shows ..", "The conclusions made from this analysis are ...."

Normally, we can`t use either "I" or "We" in a thesis.

My supervisor recommended using "I' which I did for my thesis. In the end, I don't think it matters that much as long as your supervisor/committee are fine with it.
