We are working on a revised version of the global water cycle and need estimates of surface and deep ocean water. We have found several estimates from popular sources (websites and magazines) ranging from 80-90% deep water, but haven't found peer-reviewed estimates. The line between surface and deep water is often set at a neutral density of 28.11 kg/m3 (e.g. Ganachaud and Wunsch 2000, Nature). We are also looking for global estimates of ice discharge (mainly Greenland and Antarctica) if you have any good references. Thanks!
On the basis of water depth the "deep ocean" (with water depth more than 200 m) I used 55% of planet surface in my lectures - I don't remember where I got the figures from, but it comes from plate tectonics data.
The answer depends on how you define the surface ocean. One way to define it is to take the mixed layer + the first half of the permanent thermocline (so it is a layer of say 500 m) and it represents about 10% of the ocean volume. You can quote Broecker and Peng (1982). Tracers in the Sea, Eldigio press. It is not peer reviewed but it is a reference.
Otherwise you have to look at hypsometric studies: eg: Menard, H. W., & Smith, S. M. (1966). Hypsometry of ocean basin provinces. Journal of Geophysical Research, 71(18), 4305-4325.
I think that neutral density 28.1 defines the bottom waters (below about 3000 m) rather than the deep ocean.
