From my reading and understanding, the Kaiser's criterion of eigenvalue greater than 1 and finding 'elbow' in the scree plot are two common practices (each with argument). Also, there is Parallel Analysis (a method based on the generation of random variables). I've played with PA application by Watkins (2000) but it is only for PCA case whereas I am conducting Exploratory Factor Analysis (or both can be treated similarly?)

Would be grateful for any suggestion.
