I have seen some methods like 13C NMR, and IR. Can anyone please elaborate the software and techniques that can be used to identify volatile components by other than GCMS?
NMR is best technique for identification of organic compd. there are several technique like 2d correlation cosy(1h-1h), HSQC (1H-13C) correlation , HMBC ( multiple bond correlation, and last mass, correlate to each other.
I have seen experienced persons smelling an essential oil and detecting the presence of certain compounds. If it is a known plant, identification is relatively easy with odor evaluation. In unknown plants, experience possibly can help in suspecting the presence of specific compounds or class of compounds. This however is only qualitative evaluation that needs to be scientifically confirmed. In GC analyses of essential oils, researchers have used Kovat's index or relative retention index or linear retention index for identifying compounds. Anoher method is to co-inject a compound along with the oil sample and observe the peak enrichment .
Classical chemical reactions for the presence of class of compounds or individual components.
