I had a chance of collecting a few papers in this regard.  I am providing the abstract of the collection on a nut shell: 

1) Reduce the thermal capacity of the solar still

2) Provide good insulation to minimize the heat loss

3) Provide feed water at an elevated temperature 

4) Glass sheet inclination to be optimized 

5) Select a proper glass with minimum Iron content 

6)  Provide a separate condensation zone 

7) Seal all the joints to prevent water vapor leakage 

8) Provide more surface for evaporation, with a sheet of cotton cloth 

9) Select the base color properly

There are papers on experimental optimisation of the angels 

Normally,  the still will be painted black.   Few Japanese and Israeli papers to have dark brown or blue prints also.
