Reclamation of desert land has been rarely advocated recently in China because that will cause further desertification. We are now focusing on the control of desertificaiton and the protection and recovery of grass land in desert The measures we take in order to control desertification and protect grass land are grain to green project, natural forest protection programme, etc. You may find some information on that clue. If you have any other question, please feel free to contact me.
Now a day all of the mentioned methods have to use in form of integration method for reclamation of desert land.In my experience based on the conducted research studies in Iran this methods is the most workable .
Iran is arid soils, is it? So, i think water, soil and economic are important to reclamation of desert land. Do you have which main problem of the arid soils in Iran, tools of GIS could be help or not appear this problem?
For us, Distribution of the fresh water (canals), soil texture, CaCO3 and salinity, and I want to study what the best method to improve these soils using GIS tools?
yes about 90 per cent of the geographical surface of Iran are located in the arid & semi arid climatic conditions. So vast areas are covered by the arid soils.thus it is long time that we trying to overcome the problems relating to the desert areas of the country as well as reclamation of the land. The best GIS tool that we have found to be suitable one is ILWIS (Integrated Land & Water Information System). It would be better you use Aster , Spot or IRS6p images and follow the GIS method for the soil samples, water points for mapping.
Thanks for your advice, let me ask why you prefer ILWIS (Integrated Land & Water Information System) ?
In arid Country soils have some problems such as distribution of the fresh water (canals), soil texture, CaCO3 and salinity. I want to study what the best method to improve these soils using GIS tools? My branch is Land Evaluation programs in arid soils .
Excellent article on this topic is "The Great Oasis" by Burkhard Bilger (The New Yorker, 12/19/2011), especially the section re: the remarkable comeback/greening of Niger and neighboring countries of the Sahel over the past 25 years.
To me GIS is a tool mostly for mapping. So I would like to propose that it would be better you work on mapping method of soil salinity which first you must identify applied index. In this regard using MCDM methods can be useful.
