I am doing research on bioethanol production from xylose but HPLC is not within my reach for now. I want to know which other methods are good for quantifying glucose and xylose in the mixture of the two (cofermentation).
You can do perform reducing sugar assay using DNS method. this will give you total reducing sugars in the broth. and simultaneously perform GOD-POD assay which is specific for glucose. Alternatively you can estimate xylose using Bial's test (using orcinol reagent) which is specific for pentose sugars,
The best method for quantifying glucose and xylose in the mixture is HPLC, but when they are not available the DNS method used for determination total reducing sugar.
