In an effort to prevent corrosion development on the surface of steel components, a thin layer of light oil was sprayed on the surface of this metallic component during processing. It was observed that the oil spray really prevents corrosion from developing on the surface of the components when compared with the one processed without oil spray. Before this oil spray technique can be adopted in our plant, the amount of oil deposited on the surface of the component must be quantified. My question is: what method/approach can be used to determine the quantity of deposited oil on the surface of the component? This quantification is necessary for the next stage of operation. Your suggestion/comment/advice is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
What about using some detergent to remove oil ? You could collect the micella and estimate the oil versus the detergent used.

Spray coating
Given that the oil film to be quantified is present on components that are probably moving and visible only briefly ,direct measurement is difficult. It would make sense therefore to measure and control the oil film content per component via a precisely metered proportional oil flow to the spray head. Positive displacement pumps are available for such applications.
Like Mr. Oulton's example, indirect methods work very well. You can try the method of weighing with a precision weighing device.
