Leadership is the key to everything - success in personal life, professional life, community life or national life. A good leader may not get himself to his family, society, organisation or otherwise, final destination. But he would definitely take himself several 'progressive' notches above others. But what makes him what he is - his education, the sweat of his brow or just his natural self?
An MBA does not a leader make. Quality leadership is borne out in results. The skills that determine success for a leader are: can you coach your people to be better than they thought they could be; can you take command when you need to without micromanaging; and can you create an environment in which your team will thrive.
I spell this out in my book, The Bosshole Effect an Amazon Best Seller. I believe people make management too theoretical and guideline driven. Focus on these core skills and you will see much better results.
Dear Gregory, very concisely said and a lot. May I add a few queries?
1. To coach people: Perhaps we need some education - theories and tools.
2. To take command: other people need to recognise that we are worthy of being given that command.
3. To create environment: we need certain practices like for example 'delegation' for which we need qualities like integrity, faith, etc.
I am now back to my original question - do we get these by education, by exposure or because are born with those qualities and rest everything (like a team) is given?
Nobody is a born leader. You must learn how to lead by acting like a leader. As far as the step by step how to do this I describe this pretty well in my book which you can check out for free.
