A practitioners perspective...Artificial intelligence is a tool, a super fast library, but a tool nonetheless. It adds velocity, richness and reach to problem solving and communication. The fundamentals of leadership go on unchanged and harnessing the power of AI has without doubt shifted the access to information and augmented our creativity. Curiosity is a key leadership capability and AI has a connective power that has the potential to be a capability multiplier. But back to first principles, it is seductive to frame leadership in the context of individual capability. A lot of energy and resources go into defining, selecting and developing these capabilities. However leadership is fundamentally about teams. How leaders influence and engage others in a shared purpose and sustain collaborative activity. Leaders are effective when they get things done that they couldn't get done by themselves, no matter their talent. In the 90's we loitered with the idea of self-directed teams, but they never really worked. Enabling collaboration and teamwork is about influence. It is leadership work. Why is this important? Firstly, strategy and planning are worthless without understanding how leaders connect and engage individuals and teams in the desired future state. Secondly, teams are engaged by purpose. People love hearing managers tell stories - they don't even have to be good at it. They just need to turn up and talk about what is going on and what's the big picture. Ask questions; how does the team contribute to that picture? How do we add value to that contribution? How will we know how we are doing? Thirdly taking accountability - owning the outcome is fundamental for leaders. Teams will engage and get behind the wheel and push when they see their leader invested in a result.
In our book "Leading Beyond the Ego",2nd ed - published by Routledge, https://www.leadershapeglobal.com/lbte-second-edition , we list and discuss the 11 Transpersonal Practices of a Complex Adaptive System (CAS) - see attached list - and the key characteristics of a Transpersonal Leader (Caring, Radical, Ethical, Authentic, Sustainable, Emotionally Intelligent, Performance-enhancing). In today's complex and uncertain world, from a basis of values and emotional intelligence, we must seek to reduce hierarchy and devolve leadership, and move away from the centralisation that digitalisation has inadvertently caused.
