I know that Sony used to produce self pulsating red laser diodes for DVD players, but they are no longer being manufactured (at least not by Sony). From my searches it seems that all DVD players today rely on single mode CW laser diodes for their operation. Is that correct?

Search for "RLD-65" series (e.g. RLD65MZT1, RLD65MZT2, RLD-65MC or RLD-65PC).
These diodes are red-colored laser diodes developed for use with DVDs.
Laser diodes used in DVD are plain CW 650 nm or so. Players use something like 5-10 mw, writers - around 150-300 mw (optical power, depending on the read/write speed). It is hard to believe that really pulsed laser diodes at 650-670 nm wavelength were ever produced (in commercial quantities, if at all). Many CW laser diodes specify though the "pulsed" mode - but it is better said as a short overdriving mode - with 2-3x of their max power in CW for the short period of time. With advances in technology it became useless - if you can easily get 50 mw CW, why would you need "pulsed" 20 mw out ow 5 mw CW LD? For comparison - really pulsed LD produce up to 100W (yes - watts) in 40-100 ns pulses at 900 nm or so.

Shavkat - from what I understand the reason that self pulsation laser diodes were integrated in DVDs was not the required power but the decrease in speckle noise. Keep in mind that these aren't regular pulsed lasers but they are somewhat in between CW and pulsed laser diodes.
