Transaction based messaging sent via UDP packets over an ad-hoc WLAN is common.

With UDP there is no guarantee of delivery, but it is more appropriate than TCP becuase occasional obstructions to the line-of-sight due to the moving Tx and Rx will cause the wireless links to be unreliable.
