Gastroenteritis is cause by the bacteria called vibrio, it has around 12 species that lives in costal waters. You may get infected by this bacteria by eating raw fish or drinking contaminated water from water contains the bacteria.
There are numerous bacterial species causing intestinal infections. The disease may be caused by direct bacterial invasion to the epithelial cells and underlying tissue or by cytotoxins and enterotoxins.
Here just examples of the most common genera with multiple species causing gastroenteritis by invasion or by toxins or both:
Salmonella
Shigella
Clostridium
Campylobacter
Vibrio
Aeromonas
And the following are examples of species with a well-known history of GIT infections
Numerous bacterial species cause gastroentrities such as Salmonella enterocolites, Campylobacter jejunii , Camp.coli . E. coli , Aeromonas hydrophila, Shigella , Vibrio cholera and other Vibrio species , Citrobacter freundii.....
People usually acquire bacterial gastroenteritis by consumption of contaminated food/water. These common bacteria that causes gastroenteritis are Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter spp., Vibrio spp., Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus cereus, etc. However, despite the fact that there are numerous bacteria that could cause this illness, one can still prevent it by ensuring food safety protocols and performing proper handwashing technique.
Gastroenteritis are usually caused by viruses (norovirus, rotavirus, etc.), but some bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli can also be causative agents of the said illness. It can be acquired via fecal-oral route and some examples are by ingesting contaminated food or water and contact with unwashed hands or objects which may carry the bacteria. However, there had been recent discoveries that it can now be caused by Plesiomonas shigelloides.
Gastroenteritis is an infection that causes inflammation in the digestive system caused by a bacteria, parasite or virus. Bacterial gastroenteritis are often refer as food poisoning, occurs when a bacteria like C. jejuni, E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus, and Yersinia cause an infection in the stomach. It occurs after consuming contaminated food or water. Bacterial gastroenteritis can be easily spread and acquired through person to person contact.
There are three types of gastroenteritis or food poisoning. So, we can classify these bacteria into three groups based on hoe to induce illness and to exert their effect on us:
1- infection food poisoning: in which bacteria found in food and multiply in it but when we eat the food they produce their toxins in the GIT and cause gastroenteritis such as(Salmonella E. coli, Campylobacter).duration of illness is moderately long.
2- Intoxication food poisoning: bacteria found in food multiply in food and produce their toxins in it, so we eat intoxicated food, the duration of illness is short. Such as (S. aureus, Clostridium perefrengens).
3- Toxicoinfection food poisoning: a combination of the two previous forms.
duration of illness is moderate. such as (Bacillus cereus, Clostridium botulinum).
In the developed world Campylobacter jejuni is the primary cause of bacterial gastroenteritis, with half of these cases associated with exposure to poultry. In children, bacteria are the cause in about 15% of cases, with the most common types being Escherichia coli, Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter species.
