Hello everyone,

I am reading several papers about irradiation at the surface of material these days. The publications I have read including Coherent displacement of atoms during ion irradiation, Nature 398 (1999) 49, Effect of Viscous Flow on Ion Damage near Solid Surfaces, Phys. Rev. Lett. 72 (1994) 364-367, Molecular dynamics investigations of surface damage produced by kiloelectronvolt self-bombardment of solids, Philosophical Magazine A 79 (1999) 795-820.

In these papers, they all talked about ‘adatoms’ on the surface. It seems they did not give much information about how to define an ‘adatom’. So, my question is what atoms should be considered as adatoms? If I applied Wigner-Seitz analysis to define the interstitials and vacancies in the damaged configuration, may I consider the interstitials at the surface are the adatoms.

Thanks very much in advance!
