As a third-year Sustainable Agriculture student at PNG University of Natural Resources and Environment, majoring in Agricultural Protection, I want to focus my research on improving crop protection in PNG. Many of our fruits cannot be exported due to pests, diseases, and biosecurity concerns. From your professional perspective, what are the most critical research gaps in crop disease and pest management that could help PNG overcome these barriers and boost both production and exports?
Researching the maximising of soil health could be a productive area of research - sourcing and testing animal manures (including human?) and recording the impact of healthy vigorous growth boosting plant's own protection against pests and diseases. Does the aim of exporting around the world really fit well with the environmental and sustainability aims?
