I'm grateful to you for posing this question.  It needs a lot of discussion -and  it is not easy to answer it shortly.In my opinion teaching SLA/Foreign language should be done translingually-transculturally. I'll add more to this a little later on as i have to finish now.Good-night.

This is the first time I've heard of this term (thank you for the links/references) but I would argue that the idea of taking into account the totality of our students' lives and knowing who our students are and what they are bringing into our classrooms is/should be the basis for all teaching and learning, not just language teaching. In my work as the director of the teaching center I have the privilege of working with faculty across disciplines and I see over and over how important it is to learn as much as we can about our students: what prior knowledge and experiences they bring with them and why they are in our classes. It is only by helping them connect their learning with their lives, whether it be language or any other discipline, that transformative learning can occur. 

I would like recomend prof. Alberto Bastrdas Boada, previoiusly recommendede by Ms Ana Isabel -it's a very interesting article.
