Let me start with my experience with number of newly joined employees.

This is a part of my training.

HR principle for new recruitment states, 'first try adapt the system you join, prove yourself as an asset then gradually try optimize the resources and improve it. Many times it happens as a mistake that people joining an established organization try changing it since day one of their joining.'  

It is a very good idea. It will be good for students and researchers. They will get more exposure and expertise if this idea becomes a practice in its real sense.

This is a good idea. It is always the quest of the young scientist to know where the frontiers of a particular field stands. This quest gets easy answer when researchers that work on the frontiers post and discuss their activities on a timely basis  as research is the activity to abridge the gap between what is known and established truth and what can be extended  or imagined to create new results.  

That is one of what people do in faculty learning community (FLC). You can search the website of  Miami University , where you can find tons of information relavant with FLCs.

Preparing a topic/mini lecture every weekend has few important benefits:

1. It will enhance network, discussion, and communication among RG members

2. It will give a insight to the students

3. It will help to himself to consolidate the lecture

4. It will update him/her

5. Etc.

In-put is always good. There is so much information out there right now, it is hard to be sure it is from a dependable source. so my answer is yes.

It is also matter of cost. Under such the same infrastructure (IT) I am afraid it would not be possible. @Prabhani was speaking about the issue of uploading videos. So we do speak about new storages. 

Webinars would be a fine idea as @Rob suggested.

Today is supposed to be the start of the first week topics. 

Please use the weekend time so each of you can write a mini topic about the work you are doing and share it here. I am already preparing mine. 

I agree with the idea of video, however since the feature is not available, it is either we live with writing for now or we use another service like YouTube for the video only and share the link here. As we progress, maybe we start new threads for each topic and/or use the blog as suggested by Dr. Ljubomir. 

At the end of the day I believe it is a personal preference on how you want to do it, but most important thing is the start.

The topic I am working on is bench-marking using available average data at early life of the oil and gas fields and comparing that to physics calculations and existing brown fields. As during early stages of the field life, the data is limited and building geological and reservoir models will be based on assumptions, I am considering the fact that time and cost can be saved by using scientific quick calculations and bench-marking to brown fields.

I am looking at the topic from geological, reservoir engineering, well completion and development scheme points of views.

As from reservoir point of view, I am using the parameters that affect the productivity of a well under certain flow regime (pseudo steady state and transient flow) to be able to have a rough estimate of the productivity. Specifically, there parameters are: drawdown pressure, average volumetric permeability, net thickness, fluid properties: formation factor and viscosity and average drainage area. I am aware that there are other factors like the shape factor and heterogeneity that I should take into consideration, however I am delaying that to face 2 of the project. Thus, looking into wells from brown fields that resulted in a certain production rate from reservoirs have same or close enough reservoir engineering parameters in addition to using quick physics calculation (fluid flow equations).

Second aspect is well completion. Like the type of well, skin and average wellbore radius are important factors in defining the production rate. I am developing a graph that for the same values of reservoir engineering parameters, estimate the difference in cumulative production and/or average rate that can result from well completion (assuming same flow regime for now).

Third is geological model. The type of depositional environment, faulting in the system and aquifer existence/type can affect ultimate recovery. I am taking into account these parameters.

Finally, development scheme. In development scheme I mean recovery of oil reservoirs by waterflood, gas injection, low salinity injection .. etc

At the end, I am expecting the result to be sort of set of graphs. For each depositional environment and geological aspects there are different sets of graphs for the reservoir engineering and well completion ranges. Finally, there are different sets for each development scheme (waterflood, gas injection, EOR .. etc). The sets of graphs will take into account both: physical calculations and data from similar brown fields.

Thanks. I totally agree that members are mostly active during Mondays and Wednesdays. Based on your suggestion, we will start each Wednesday from now on. Thus, I will edit my post on Wednesday and wait for members to add their posts. I think this week will be anyway a start to gauge the interaction and we can firm conclusions on best way forward based on that. Maybe we even make a window rather than fixed day (from Monday to Wednesday is adding topics and from Wednesday to Monday is the window for discussions).
