It was recently found by the German Wissenschaftsrat WR (science advisory board) that the grading of the final theses in some faculties at German universities has significantly increased over the last years. The word of inflationary university grades is going around and a call for grading standards is issued in some journals that report about it. I also see and hear about such a grading policy now and then. My understanding is that the whole grading range is to be applied and the performance of the candidate needs to be evaluated relative to the the issued task and its Level of difficulty. Some lecturers and professors feel like all candidates have to get a minimum grade and feel that everything below 1.3 (A-) or magna cum laude is already a bad result for the candidate. As a consequence one or two more Levels below will be considered for grading but not all the rest of the possible scale. Standards could work well with standard test material, but how about for theses? What are your experiences and methods?
