Educational coaching is a very effective way to help improve instructional practices that influence student learning. This methodology is based on setting personal goals and on the implementation of a series of planned actions that allow the subject to carry out certain ways of being and acting.
Our answer here will be very biased, let me say that up front. DoctoralNet is based on this model - aiding the university help PhD candidates finish faster by employing strategic used of technology and mentoring as we implement an educational coaching model. We see it as one way universities can improve retention, completion and achieve better students outcomes for less expense.
We think we are at the forefront of a wave of educational technology solutions aimed this direction. Its a wide open field right now - we'll be watching how it develops.
My view is that educational counseling should involve the mentor helping students identify, clarify, and develop their individual natural interests, abilities, talents, and insights. This focus naturally involves exploring particular areas of study and endeavor that passionately excite the individual student and relate to the particular contributions that she or he wishes to make to society and to other people. In my view, every individual person is naturally endowed with a distinctive intrinsic temperament or "archetypal soul blueprint" that is meant, by the core of their being and the universal matrix of being, to intuitively guide them in their creative, intellectual, vocational, social, psychological, spiritual, and holistic integral development, as a way of preparing themselves to serve other people, society, and perhaps the whole biosphere, with the distinctive particular talents, abilities, insights, and inclinations that life has bestowed upon them. A good mentor empathically elicits the student's own ongoing journey of reflective self-discovery and empowers them to become increasingly self-directed, rather than imposing the mentor's own ideas or agenda on the students, which could possibly lead the student away from his or her own natural course of development. At its best, educational counseling also encourages each student to explore the broader intellectual, experiential, and transformative contexts of specific areas of inquiry and/or endeavor that they choose to focus on, because every particular subject matter naturally impacts and is impacted by its relationship to other phenomena and the indivisible whole web/network of reality, being, energy, or experience. Educational counseling should also encourage students to see beyond the surface appearance of phenomena as a way of discerning their deeper intellectual, experiential, and transformative significance. This involves encouraging students to explore developing penetrating insights that come from experiential communion with the particular subject matter that they are studying. This process of non-dualistic, participatory, or empathic, experiential communion can bring insights arising from deeper levels of the psyche and deeper aspects of the subject-matter, beyond what can be grasped from a more detached, distanced, dispassionate, perspective. I discuss the process of empathic mentoring, and the development of related higher noetic capabilities of mind and heart, in the context of psychotherapy, personal relationships, educational counseling, and compassionate societal transformation, in two books which I have recently published. I fully agree with Barry's viws on educational counselling. That's what I offer to my students and they take advantage of it. My experience showshat they like it and don't have the feeling of beeing "corrected" all the tim. It' very subtle way of educational mentoring.
We have to be careful not to spoon-feed the student, or do the student's homework for them.
Educations coaching teaches in many ways by both theoretical and practical trainings and lectures, opens minds and horizons, gives exposure to variety of brain storming sessions and attitude of competitiveness, students/scholars can get handouts / crispy notes and get acquainted to many MCQs and knowledge boxes
