If the referee decides to have a review the referee’s final decision may be based solely on information from the VAR (‘VAR only’ review) or it may also involves the referee going to the side of the field to look at the replay(s) (‘on-field review’). The referee will make a final decision and the original decision will only change if it was clearly wrong.

The Nigeria Vs Argentina match was a clear indication that the referee may ignore reality and make partial decisions, the VAR call not withstanding. All the VAR does is call the attention of the centre referee to have a clearer view; the discretion still lies with the centre ref.

Yes, I am a great football fan and in my younger years I practiced this sport in an organized and intense way in semi-professional teams.

The VAR, is the video capture in real time, of controversial plays where the look, vision or criterion of the referee can fail or corroborate their criteria when issuing a penalty like a yellow card (when putting two in the same game is thrown out), a red card (immediate expulsion from the game).

Also, plays that are sanctioned as fouls in the opposite area and is equivalent to a "Penalty Throw", kick the player vs. goalkeeper ball nine meters (steps) away from the goal. Also plays sanctioned as "Out of place", when the player is very advanced when receiving a ball and there is at least one opposing player before the goalkeeper. In the same sense, when there is doubt as to whether the ball entered the opposing goal to dictate "Goal"

Indubitably, the use of VAR system can be a great aid to referees particularly when they are not quite certain about making the right decision. The reason is that referees are not perfect in doing their jobs and failing to do one's work perfectly may result in painful feelings of shame, judgment, and blame.However, there is the danger of total reliance on VAR which can adversely affect referees' working quality as a professional. Too much reliance on video displays may reduce the referees' degree of precision and professional judgment. It seems that the knowledge and wisdom of the referee is very crucial, but it can be complemented and fortified by VAR capabilities. Each grows out of the other, and we need both of them.

The Video Assistant Referee system, known as VAR, is football's first use of video technology to reach more correct decisions. The system was trialled in the FA and Carabao Cups last season, as well as the German and Italian leagues.

The system has already been used in the World Cup group stage to correct and clarify decisions, including Diego Costa's first goal against Portugal, France's penalty against Australia as well as Sweden's penalty against South Korea.

Is it being used at the World Cup?

Yes, following the unanimous approval of the International Football Association Board in Zurich in March, who voted to introduce the system permanently. This is the first World Cup using video replays, although goal line technology was successfully employed in Brazil four years ago.

What are the rules of VAR being used?

VAR only intervenes in the course of a match when the officials have made a 'clear and obvious error' in one of four key areas.

Goals:

A close offside decision is the most common reason for VAR being consulted after a goal has been scored, but shirt-pulling and other infringements can cause goals to be chalked off.

Few teams benefited because of VAR, it is good..... Match between Ger Vs Kor, in injury time, Korea scored a goal wanted VAR and won the game. As Stephen I. Ternyik mentioned, it is useful if it can optimized and fix the set backs existed.

Welcome development from FIFA. The outcome is encouraging, no more unnecessary apology from ref after matches. Players now limit their side reactions, diving and deceives are reduced, less argument between coaches/player and ref. WC has been a fantastic tournament with the initiative.

I believe that the VAR, as it is, can be a useful tool for the referees to make decisions. To improve the overall quality of the refereeing, however, it would be necessary for the VAR to be used more frequently even against the referee's decision. This, however, would probably result in many possible stop & go of the game and perhaps it would be necessary to introduce the idea of the effective time rather than continued. So football would probably become another game.
